Art and Technology Post1

       Hello my name is Nick DeCurtis. I am from New Jersey and I enjoy skating, climbing, hiking, camping, and outdoor activities. I am pursuing my BFA in Film and Media Arts and would like a career as a cinematographer or editor. I am inspired by the productions of National Geographic, the Discovery channel, and the History channel. I've always been interested in exploring uncharted and unknown places, and would love to be able to document some of our world's natural treasures.
      Nevertheless, I am also interested in fictional television and movie production, so I would be more than happy working on studio productions. The power of motion picture's ability to capture a story, event, or place in time for everyone to see is truly magnificent to me, and with digital technology always advancing the possibilities are endless. Art is such an instrumental part of people's cultural, personal, and communal identities, and we would be nowhere without it.
       I look forward to this class because we will cover a variety of art forms, cultures, mediums and types of expression. Inspiration is in everything and the more we learn about the unfamiliar the more new ideas can flourish. By seeking a deeper knowledge and understanding of all art forms and how they intertwine with technology I hope to expand my horizons. I wish everyone the best this semester and am excited to see what the class has in store.

Xerox Project 10/30

    For this project we had to scan parts of ourselves and put together a 2D/3D piece of art inspired by an art movement. The first obstacle for me was developing an idea, the second was getting over the fact that I had to scan my face in front of other students. However, as I actually went and started scanning myself my idea became more clear.     I have always found surrealist art to be quite intriguing because of its dreamlike quality and focus on the human psyche. The art of the Surrealist movement focused on unleashing and expressing the unconscious mind. Therefore, I found my inspiration in this psychological approach.      Through my piece I sought to convey the effect and power of our unconscious and conscious minds. The variety of gestures both positive and negative are directed and projected at my "unconscious" face. This is to show how sometimes we can be our own worst enemy, but at the same we can lift ourselves up.

Deconstruction Video

For my deconstruction video I sought to compare and contrast "noise". I wanted to play with the idea of how the audience felt when viewing and hearing a mix of a little and then a lot of visual and auditory noise. In the drastic shift of the video I wanted to elicit intense feelings of either surprise, annoyance, or any other unexpected reaction. This was an interesting project to explore a sense of reception to both visuals and audio sounds that were at first calming and then chaotic. In my exploration of how we subconsciously react and respond to stimuli I was pleased with the result of the in class screening. B4. Broadway

    When I was younger I saw a production of A Christmas Carol in NYC, and while I don't remember specific details about the set, cast, and costumes, I remember the feeling brought by the environment. The anticipation as my family made our way to the seats and then the growing tension prior to the start of the show. The way each of the cast members so whole-heartedly played their parts filled me with a sense of inspiration. The unity brought about through the audience experiencing the story and the performers telling it. I found that to be a beautiful thing.    Angel de Quinta's Stage Door blog provides a look at some of the best broadway plays and performances to date. Of the excerpts available I took interest in the performances of Hair, Grease, and Sunset Boulevard.
